Tea is more universal than coffee and has been around much longer. People gather to share tea, they may come from many directions and many backgrounds, but we can all share the tea from a single pot and find the same warmth and nourishment from it. To share tea we must stop what we are doing. We must fill a kettle with water, we must heat up the kettle, pour the hot water over the tea leaves and wait. It takes mindfulness, focus, intent, patience and, hopefully, love to make tea.
Tikkun olam is Hebrew for "repairing the world". Like tea, it takes mindfulness, focus, intent, patience and, hopefully, love. It requires the action in deeds, words and thoughts. We must consider others and put them as our guest first and fore most in our thoughts and show compassion to the stranger and rekindle their spark of the divine.
I know I'm not perfect, quite far from it actually, but this is my journey to repair myself and to help others. Sure, I'll have advances and I'll fall, but I have to always get up and try again. Be mindful, compassionate and willing to help others.
If it is broken, fix it.
